Check printing business: Deluxe
Corporation
Deluxe Checks were founded by William Roy Hotchkiss. It
started out with a "great idea" in which we wanted to revolutionize an
industry in which he vowed "to do one thing and one thing only, but do
it better, faster and more economically than anyone else." In that, he
decided he would print bank check in which he would specialize in making
checks with personalized information. He opened his first check printing
business in 1915 of November without much success. However, in the
1920s, his business started to soar and therefore, as the market for
checks grew, so did Deluxe in which they expanded to other cities.
In 1959, Deluxe became involved in the new push to automate banking.
When MICR started to become used in bank checks, Deluxe evolved rapidly
to the changes and quickly became a leader in the industry.
In 1965, Deluxe announced their change into a public company. As the
industry in checks and banking changed, so did Deluxe with innovations
such as "artwork" on checks and checkbooks. In April of 1980, Deluxe
also changed its name from Deluxe Check Printers to Deluxe Corporation
as they were placed on the NYSE.
